Former chief editor of the Boston Globe, Richard Gilman, had an idea to take his love of journalism and politics and carve out a niche for himself in the blogosphere. But he couldn’t do it like every other news blog out there – he wanted to raise the bar and present more thoughtful and fact-based editorial than most of the online news sources do now, and he wanted the content to have a local feel and focus.

This is the premise behind ThinkingArizona. A thoughtful, insightful analysis of current topics related to the political landscape of a particular place – in this case, of course, Arizona. Instead of making broad generalizations, ThinkingArizona interprets the facts about Arizona’s changing political landscape as a microcosm of the larger country. Data is presented right alongside editorial so that the viewer may draw their own conclusions.

While the approach ensured that the content would be above and beyond the typical blog, the design had to do something similar. We took notions of printed newspapers and magazines and combined them with useful conventions of blogs. The result is a “reading pane” that sits at the top of the screen in which the content scrolls left to right like the pages in a book. The home page of the site presents an “opening spread” idea with a prominent image on one side and an excerpt or conceptual lead-in to the topic at hand. Unlike a magazine, though, the content can refresh, and typically, an Edition launches with one main story but then gets added to weeks later as data and editorial start to evolve.

An Editor’s blog allows the authors to comment on  tangential stories in the news while an Edition is evolving. Comments are collected along the way and become part of the conversation of the whole Edition.
